No matter how young or old you are, it is crucial to take care of your skin. Having a great skincare routine helps maintain its youthful appearance and avoid skin-related issues such as dry, dull skin or even acne breakouts. While this might sound like it’s easy, as a skin care specialist - I am shocked to hear how many times people tell me they don’t use a moisturizer in their daily skincare routine… This can have serious consequences over time. In this blog post, I want to educate you on why moisturizing your skin is crucial even if you struggle with acne-prone skin.

Moisturizers don’t add water to your skin, but rather help hold water in the outer layer of your skin to keep it hydrated. How does that work? Moisturizers contain ingredients called humectants, which draw the water into your skin, and emollients, which form a protective film and trap the water in the skin. There are all kinds of different moisturizers from lotions, creams, and gels. Varying between water and oil-based.

Remember, everyone’s skin is different. The same product that works well for one person, may not be the best option for another. My biggest tip that I give to clients is to stop listening to their friends and do their own research. I always recommend visiting a trusted professional to learn more about your unique skin type and what your skin truly needs. By doing so, you will have a better understanding of what type of moisturizer you will need in your daily regimen. Here are some tips to help you find a moisturizer that is compatible with oily skin and acne-prone skin.

Lotions and Gels

Lotions and gels tend to be more water-based and therefore less likely to aggravate oily, acne-prone skin. You should always avoid ointments as they are greasier and oil-based. Another way of choosing the right moisturizer for acne-prone skin is to look for products labeled “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic”, these are less likely to clog your pores and cause acne.

The one moisturizer that I trust and have seen great results for my acne-prone skin clients is the Ultra Sheer Moisturizer by Skin Medica. It is so lightweight and non-comedogenic that it provides this deep hydration leaving your skin radiant after the first use. This moisturizer is an oil-free, fragrance-free moisturizer with antioxidants and hyaluronic acid to hydrate oil-prone and sensitive skin.

A daily moisturizer is not a personal care treatment that anyone should skip out on. It only takes a minute or two each day, but it provides you with long-term benefits. Make the time into your daily regimen to protect your skin from the elements of life itself and put on moisturizer each day. Your skin will thank you later.
